So, without further ado, here are our top ten singing groups in Leicester and spoiler alert: number one is going to make you want to sign up today...
Alright, right off the bat we can tell you Sing Social comes out on top because the rest really just can't compete! Sing Social is a completely new fun singing group which has opened up its doors to Leicestershire and already made its way into everybody's hearts and minds. Its philosophy is just perfect: gather together once a week for one hour where you can sing your favourite hits from pop music, rock, and musicals without the fear of performance and without a marking sheet or any judges looking down upon you.
It's what sets Sing Social apart from its competitors. Their "no audition, no pressure" mindset. This is not about being the most talented vocalist present, but about feeling good, connecting, and finding your tribe through singing an amazing song together. It is a weekly hour that is completely yours. An opportunity to de-stress, have fun, laugh, sing, and walk out feeling ten times better than you did when you came in! Regardless of whether you've been singing all your life or have no idea when you've last sung (out loud at least, around another person), this is the singing social club for you. It is welcoming and friendly. It was made for Leicester.
Coming in at number two is Leicester Amika Choir, a wonderfully diverse community choir with a truly global flavour. Rooted in the belief that everyone can learn to sing in beautiful four-part harmony, they hold no auditions whatsoever. Their songs are drawn from around the world and sung in their original languages, everything from Xhosa to Maori to Norwegian to English. They rehearse at the African Caribbean Centre on Maidstone Road, Leicester, and your first session is completely free to try. If you've ever wanted to sing something truly unexpected and feel genuinely moved by it, Amika is your choir.
If you're looking for something that goes far beyond a single choir, Musical Village is the answer. They are a community of choirs and sing-along groups catering for people of all ages and abilities in Leicester and Leicestershire, with a mission to bring communities together. Their musical director, Lesia Smaditch, has been described as Leicestershire's very own answer to Gareth Malone, high praise indeed. Musical Village has been recognised with both a Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire Queen's Platinum Jubilee Award and the Trustee Choice Award at the Leicestershire Community Champions Awards. With a wide variety of choral styles and a warm, welcoming ethos, this is Leicester singing at its community finest.
Those who like performing a bit more may find the Leicester Events Choir an excellent choice. It was formed in 2014 with an intention to bring together all the people who enjoy singing but want to get an opportunity to perform. Choir members make the atmosphere friendly while rehearsing songs and lyrics they will be performing soon. No conditions are needed for joining and no experience in singing is necessary at all. Every Monday evening rehearsal takes place in Leicester. Those talented choir members who want to can get an opportunity to sing solo. As one member put it: "Singing has always been a passion of mine and Lizzy allowed me to express myself!"
Leicester Philharmonic Choir can be described as an organization for both lovers of classical and choral music. Formed in 1886, the Leicester Philharmonic Choir collaborates with professional orchestras and holds performances at places like the Symphony Hall in Birmingham and Royal Albert Hall, playing pieces of work like Carmina Burana, Belshazzar's Feast, and Requiem by Verdi. phil Being the biggest choir in Leicester, the Leicester Philharmonic Choir has been able to attain its objective as formulated by the founder through performances of classical and contemporary music. And if ever you have visited De Montfort Hall and wished you were on stage, this is how you make it happen.
But if you would rather pursue a more collective form of experiencing classical music, then maybe you might be interested in taking part in The City of Leicester Singers. No need to have auditions there; they merely need people who are fond of music and people who can sing properly. They meet on Mondays every week in Christchurch situated at Clarendon Park Road, and they perform three concerts every year, one of which is during the Christmas Charity Concert. Since COLS has been established since 1963, this is surely a very accommodating venue for all music lovers.
The Fosse Singers are a fantastic choir, which does not audition, and has many songs to choose from. The Fosse Singers sing everything from traditional songs to contemporary songs, including folk, popular, spiritual, jazz, musical theatre, and light classics. This choir welcomes members who are above 18 years of age. Some of the previous performances include performing at Belvoir Castle and Leicester Cathedral.
The Knighton Community Choir is a non-auditioned and friendly community choir based in the Knighton area of Leicester. Founded by Simon Lubkowski, a National Barbershop Quartet Champion and Music Director with multiple Leicester choirs under his belt. The choir is based in Clarendon Park groby-sings and has built a reputation as one of the most relaxed and welcoming options in the city. New singers are always warmly received, and the community atmosphere is second to none.
This is an absolute diamond in the rough! TLC Voices is a choir from The Laura Centre based in Leicester. There are no tryouts, just attend and sing! The first two weeks are on a trial basis so that you can assess whether you like it or not, and the choir rehearses on Wednesdays in the evening. It's a fantastic experience, very laid-back in terms of atmosphere, showing how good vocal performances don’t have to be difficult.
Last but not least, something completely different, Leicester Youth Chorus. This ensemble gives children between the ages of 7 and 25 the chance to perform a variety of music pieces, welcomes newcomers without holding auditions, and does not require any prior experience. This is truly the way a choir community should be, with openness and joy, brimming with promise. Even as an adult reading this review, you will sense the enthusiasm and think about how great it would be if there were such a thing for adults as well. (Hint: That's what option 1 is all about.)
